Auslan Leaders Challenge 2021

Following the success of the Auslan Community Leaders Challenge in 2019 and 2020, Deaf Services and the Deaf Society invites you to participate in 2021, a year in which sign language has been more important than ever to the 30,000 Australians for whom Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is their primary language.

To coincide with 2021 International Day of Sign Languages and National Week of Deaf People, we’re asking Australian political, business and community leaders to learn and sign a brief message in Auslan to demonstrate their support for Deaf community members across Australia, and to encourage more people to engage with Auslan in positive ways. These videos will be shared across social media.

All participants in the 2021 Auslan Community Leaders Challenge will be supported throughout with training and resources from Deaf Services and the Deaf Society.

With the full support and resources of Deaf Services and the Deaf Society, you will learn to sign:

“Hello, my name is _____ (using the Auslan alphabet to fingerspell your name).”

“Happy National Week of Deaf People 2021.”

To learn how to sign this, email us at brent.phillips@deafservices.org.au and we can arrange a 15 minute 1:1 session to provide you with coaching.

We hope you can participate and show your support for Australia’s Deaf community.
